Mute to release new Residents album - The rumors were true!

Animal Lover set for February release
Image from Residents.com

THE RESIDENTS
BRAND NEW ALBUM RELEASE
ANIMAL LOVER - OUT 14th FEBRUARY 2005

"Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate in their object-relations." - Sigmund Freud

The Residents have announced details of a brand new album, their first for Mute, to be released on Valentine's Day 2005. "Animal Lover" follows the 25th Anniversary re-release of the Commercial Album in the Autumn of 2004.

When Charles Darwin first proposed in the late 1800's that homo sapiens had evolved from and were in fact a species of animal, many humans were horrified. Humans had an unusual need to feel superior, something their fellow animal associates had never quite understood. When Sigmund Freud, a few years later, destroyed the accepted opposition between sanity and madness by locating "normality" on a sliding scale, the poor humans were even more shocked. Taking a step beyond Darwin, Freud believed that the human was an animal in conflict, and informing the human of that very simple concept seemed to only increase the conflict.

In The Residents' "Animal Lover", the creatures who don't really mind if they are animals take an existential look at the upright animal whose normality is sliding toward the wrong end of the spectrum. The human beasts live in a world of primal darkness, their heads forever stuck in the ground like frightened ostriches living in a constant murky dream state.

In creating this picture book of animal tales, The Residents wanted to include a soundtrack that related directly to "animal love." The result is an imaginative CD whose rhythm tracks are based entirely on animal noise mating patterns generated primarily by cicadas and frogs. Also the actual sounds of mating whales and humans were used for longer tonal passages. They weren't mating with each other, by the way.

So the world is filled with tubular entities. Food goes in one end and shit comes out the other. Sperm goes in and babies come out. It's all we've got. That and love.

Animal Lover is released on Mute on 14th February 2005.

Residents Radio Special on national Japanese NHK FM radio

Image from Residents.com

NHK FM, the national FM radio in Japan, will broadcast a 40 minute music special on The Residents, "The Residents Special" during a New Year's extended version of a regular Saturday afternoon program called "Sekai no kaiteki ongaku" (Comfortable music in the world).

It will be aired on January 8. Gonzalez Mikami from the popular instrumental duo, Gonchichi, will host this program along with Residents expert, Manabu Yuasa, who has hosted lectures on the group in Japan.

The Residents coming to Australia
Image from Residents.com

The buzz is too loud to ignore. The Residents appear to be headed for some festivals in Australia in March 2005. There has been a long cry for this since the group hasn't played there since their 13th Anniversary Show. Considering this will be their 33rd Anniversary Show, I think you can figure out how long that has been.

I heard Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

I'll report more info as it comes in.

Icky Flix DVD Resurrected

Image from Residents.com
One of the big losses when the ESD era ended was that Icky Flix, The Residents very first DVD, also disappeared from stores. MVD, the distributor that distributed "Eskimo" and "Demons Dance Alone" DVD is set to release Icky Flix during the first quarter of 2005.

Yay, I say.

Don't forget the Boston Party

Image from Residents.com
When:
Tuesday, November 9th, 10:30pm
.
Where:
Eavesdrop at River Gods
125 River Street in Boston

Technically, it's NOT in Boston. It's in the neighboring city of Cambridge. Those using Mapquest or similar to find "125 River Street in Boston" won't get any results. Those taking the "T" (a.k.a. the subway) will want to take the Central Square stop on the Red Line.

.
description of Eavesdrop:
.
Eavesdrop is a weekly party hosted at River Gods, a unique pub located in Boston just outside Central Square on River St.
What you get is 4 hours of music and visuals, a matrix of style. Artist, fan, listener. The cozy and somehow warm confines of River Gods certainly keeps people visually stimulated. Recently voted "Best Soundsystem" by the Improper Bostonian, Eavesdrop is featured in cooperation with numerous college radio concert calendars, while many of those same college DJs join us to play records.
Eavesdrop is also mentioned with some regularity in area media from the Boston Globe to the Weekly Dig. In addition, the Eavesdrop email list continues to expand, giving the customer and interested press three or four weeks notice as to what is to come. To subscribe: send a blank email to eavesdrop@mindspring.com.
.
To be sure, Eavesdrop is not associated with any one label, any one style or any one sponsor. It's our aim to simply provide exposure to acts and music which may be missed by conventional outfits. In addition to having one great mid-week party.

I Murdered Mommy

Image from Residents.com

I Murdered Mommy.

Designed to be the crowning glory of The Residents wild ride with CD-ROM, I Murdered Mommy became an insane vision. Even as The Residents labored to design and sell the idea, the whole CD-ROM market was collapsing around them. The project was finally shelved.

The new release is a book of the drawings and writings for the project plus a CD of preliminary music that was used for the corporate sales pitches in the attempt to raise the funds to actually create the CD-ROM. It is an intriguing look at an idea that never happened as well as plug a hole in The Residents project time line. It will not be the actual CD-ROM, of course, as it never existed.

From Ralph - October 19, 2004 - TIME SENSITIVE!!!

Hi Ralph Friend...
this is for those planning to make a trip to The French Fry Factory in
Oakland this Thursday for the Commercial Album DVD screening party.

A few new announcements regarding this: Ralph America will be having a
karaoke contest with Rez tunes (the songs being used are Red Rider,
Moisture and Bach is Dead!), and a costume contest as well (start yer
sewing now!). Many of the filmmakers are flying in for this event, and
many of the bay area filmmakers will be there as well! We'll also have the
new Commercial Album DVD and CD available for sale (plus posters, shirts
etc), as well as DJing from the Ralph archives (with some never heard
before hidden gems...don't ask, i dunno what it is yet, but there is a CD
on it's way to us for exclusive party use)

and Big Brother says:

A little personal note here....

As you know, the Bay Area party coming up on thursday has been moved to the French Fry Factory in Oakland. People keep asking me about the FFF saying they have never heard of it. Truthfully neither had I, so I decided to pay a little visit yesterday to see what this place is all about.

First thing to know is that is is not a commercial operation. That is to say, there are no signs that say "French Fry" or anything else. It is a totally bland brick warehouse sitting on 4th street in an old manufacturing section of Oakland. The only way to know when you are there is to find the tiny number 278 on the door.

Passing through the door you will find yourself in the alternative world of warehouse parties, where "alternative" does not mean a new marketing term. A partially disassemble Chevy Camero sits in the middle of the downstairs room. It is not artistically lit. It is not some dramatic statement of the "commercial world in decay". No. It is the car that belongs to the owner and it is for sale. Its stark reality of being exactly what it appears to be is disturbing in a way that contrived surrealistic statements can never be. The comfort of knowing it is only art is ripped away and we are left staring at a very sad car.

A small poorly lit staircase takes you to the second floor. Abused sofas are everywhere. There is a huge walk-in freezer locker (functioning) that has been outfitted to be somewhere between an opium den and an orgy room. A stage is at the far end of the room. An illegal bar serves cheap beer and wine. In the middle of it all is a big hole that opens to the lower floor and a movie screen is set up at the end of it. People can see the screen on either floor that way. That is where we will be watching The Commercial DVD. Watch it while you sit in the car if you like, imagining that you are a character in a JG Ballard book.

This is not the safe world. This is not the showing at MOMA. It is, however, the world that The Residents came from and it is a fitting unpretentious setting for the screening of this 25th Anniversary DVD.

I would say it is not to be missed. Don't wear your good clothes.

October 18 & 23:

WHOOPY SNORP's First Fundraiser

As you probably realize, KRVS is Public Radio which is supported by listeners (like you) to pay for programs from NPR, PBS, and independent producers, as well as the production of local and international programming like WHOOPY SNORP.

KRVS is not just an internet radio station. It broadcasts regular radio programming (88.7 on your FM dial) to 650,000 people living in the Residents home state of Louisiana, bringing the fine music of The Residents to many homes that would be in cultural darkness otherwise.

So on the 18th and 23rd you will hear a number of requests for financial support for the station. But you will also hear, in it's entirety, the soon to be released Residents CD, I Murdered Mommy.

The CD contains the preliminary music that was used for the corporate sales pitches in the attempt to raise the funds to create the CD-ROM concept, I Murdered Mommy.

"On October 25th (Europe) and November 2nd (USA) Mute will re-issue one of the most relevant albums by The Residents. The Commercial Album comes in a special edition hardbook, containing previously unseen images from the forthcoming Commercial DVD and the lyrics for all 40 tracks.

The DVD will comprehend an extensive collection of new videos alongside the four original promo clips.

Created before the existence of MTV, the original 4 short movies were immediately in high rotation when the fledgling music channel began broadcasting in 1982, and were soon incorporated into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Twenty Five years later, The Residents have lovingly undertaken the task of creating ten new one-minute videos, and commissioned more than 30 outstanding artists to join in the fun. The result is The Commercial Album DVD, containing 56 One Minute Movies* - a virtual film festival in a box. The menu includes a unique interactive maze interface and a fascinating surround sound texture."

*The 56 videos include all 40 songs from the album, plus the 2 songs that were left off the album and appeared on singles in Europe, plus the original 4 Residents Videos from 1980 and 10 new Residents videos.

Press Release:

Point 1: Pop music is mostly a repetition of two types of musical and lyrical phrases, the verse and the chorus.

Point 2: These elements usually repeat three times in a three-minute song, the type usually found on top-40 radio.

Point 3: Cut out the fat and a pop song is only one minute long. Then record albums hold their own top-40, twenty minutes per side.

Point 4: One minute is also the length of most commercials, and
therefore their corresponding jingles.

Point 5: Jingles are the music of America

These were the poignant observations made by THE RESIDENTS in 1980 when they released what was to become one of their most important works, THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM, a compendium of 40 one minute "Pop Hits." Now, almost 25 years later, the Residents have revisited this landmark album with
release of THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM DVD: a video collection of 56 one-minute movies that are strikingly relevant in this age of the MTV generation with their short attention spans and their file-swapping ways... sitting there mesmerized by the rapid-fire crotch & ass shots of J-Lo, and the Matrix-inspired motion capture of P-Ditty in mid-dance move.

We are proud to announce the official Los Angeles screening of the Residents' COMMERCIAL ALBUM DVD at the posh & industry-infested Hollywood hot spot: CINESPACE. As the first venue of it's kind, Cinespace acts as an upscale restaurant, a screening room, and bar. The screening room offers a custom-designed, state-of-the-art, theatre-quality, surround-sound system with a 30 X 7 foot viewing screen, as well as other descriptive words with hyphens between them, such as: inclined booth-seating, premium-comfort, optimum-viewing, and dance-floor. This event will be hosted by Resident's disciple and
fellow purveyor of peculiarity, EGO PLUM, who has fearlessly followed in the flatfooted footsteps of the faceless four and created his own unique brand of avant garde music & art as a result of their inspiration.

In addition to the screening,

EGO PLUM and his EBOLA MUSIC QUARTET will perform ten songs from the highly influential Commercial Album.

OFFICAL PRODUCT from the RESIDENTS will be on sale at the merchandise booth.
MUTE RECORDS will be providing special give-aways (CD's, DVD's).
DJ's at CINESPACE will be forced to play nothing but THE RESIDENTS (to the horror of all the beautiful people).

RESIDENTIAL hors d'ouevres will be provided.

Mr. Plum hosted the record release party for the Residents' controversial WORMWOOD album at the world-renown AMOK BOOKSTORE in Los Angeles, as well as the screening of the definitive Residents' DVD: ICKY FLIX in 2002. The Icky Flix party was featured on MTV NEWS and included a Residents' Karaoke contest with live music performed by the Ebola Music Orchestra where audience members were encouraged to come up and sing for the grand prize of the decapitated head of a swine.

1) You can go to http://www.cafedunord.com and buy tickets for the show
right now. Might be a good idea.

2) We need help. On Oct. 21st we'll need a few volunteers to help set
things up, run the odd errand, focus a projector etc. If you are
interested, and have time in both the afternoon and evening on October

-----

Hello faithful one,
here's the latest from the Ralph Council...lots of goodies to report...

I MURDERED MOMMY, the soundtrack to the abandoned CD Rom project of 1997
is now a limited edition Ralph release. Packaged with a long long booklet,
containing the original Cryptic notes on the project, this is limited to
1000 numbered copies and comes in a DVD sized digipak with slipcase. The
music has not appeared elsewhere...

THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM DVD/CD (hardbound edition), the first releases by
MUTE are both fantastic. You get 54 one minute movies on the DVD, along
with the "maze" interface and some hidden goodies. It has been remixed for
5.1 surround, and there are filmmaker contributions from across the globe.
The CD is a special 25th anniversary edition bound in a hardcover. Quite
deluxe.

And you can purchase them in package deals:
The GRAND PACKAGE deal includes both Commercial Album releases, I Murdered
Mommy and a Commercial Album tshirt.
The COMMERCIAL DEAL includes both Commercial Album releases and the
Commercial Album tshirt. The shirt is only available with one of these
deal purchases, and to the first 100 orders.

Keep in mind that this is a presale, and that all items will be shipped by
Nov 2nd. There is a slight chance that I Murdered Mommy will be here a few
days later than that, but so far we expect them to all go out by the
official Commercial Album release date of Nov. 2nd.

Thanks for shopping RALPH, and we'll see you on roller derby...

======================================
The Residents Missing Year

The "missing year" apparently ran from late 1996 to summer 1997. It started after the completion of Bad Day on the Midway and the theatrical run of Freak Show in Prague. It ended with Disfigured Night.

In between, one project dominated The Residents every waking moment.

--------------------------

England's Dreaming

Image from Residents.com

The Residents have survived the ravages of time by evolving. This compilation reopens the old New Wave and Punk wounds and somehow The Residents are clearly no more comfortable here than they have been anywhere else. None the less, Jon Savage, noted Brit journalist, has compiled this intriguing CD that includes the pre-eyeball group doing "Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life."

There are 25 tracks - some reasonably well-known ones (Wire, Cabs, Siouxsie, Adverts, Iggy, Ramones, Devo, Buzzcocks)- some very obscure ones (Avergers, Diodes, Weirdos, Zeros, Urinals, Germs, Dils, Residents!)

Included in the digipack is a booklet with a bit about each song, in English and German. Here's what it says about the Residents track:

First issued on 45 during 1977 in a limited edition of 500, "Beyond the Valley..." answers the age-old musical question, what happens after the final crashing chord at the end of "Sgt Pepper"?, with a brilliant aural collage made entirely of existing Beatles recordings. In the context of the time, this was deeply iconoclastic (as the Beatles were one of the previous generation's idols to be overthrown) but today, "Beyond the Valley..." seems both like a fan's perverse love and an uncanny precursor of the sampling / mash-up culture to come

When:

Where:
Eavesdrop at River Gods
125 River Street in Boston
.

description of Eavesdrop:

To be sure, Eavesdrop is not associated with any one label, any one style or any one sponsor. It's our aim to simply provide exposure to acts and music which may be missed by conventional outfits. In addition to having one great mid-week party.

The Residents are masters of disguise

No, this is not an announcement of a Residents Halloween show. There is no show this Halloween.

This is the explanation of why there is no show --- The Residents have been very busy.

From the program:
"World premiere: MOFFOM and Mute Records are proud to announce the world premiere of The Commercial Album DVD by The Residents. Faceless anti-stars whose origins and personal lives have been shrouded in mystery for the past thirty years, The Residents have influenced generations of sound and visual artists with trans-media works like The Commercial Album. Initiated in 1980 as an incisive response to payola radio, they released their own original top 40, crafting each song to be exactly sixty seconds long. This would allow them to purchase advertising slots and replace the ads with songs, eliminating payola's middle men. The four films created for the project are housed today in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Now, forty new films will complete the opus. The world premiere will be attended by a Mute Records London spokesperson."

Spin Magazine shows taste (As reported from Residents.com Aug 30, 2004)

TOP TEN MUST HAVE NEW WAVE RECORDS

Image from Residents.com

Image from Residents.com

Spin Says:

"The Residents The Third Reich 'N' Roll (Ralph,1976) The demented mentors. With cover art featuring Dick Clark in a Gestapo uniform holding a carrot-keep nibbling, kids!- this geek opus remixes (i.e. eviscerates) '60's pop standards with sick, gleeful skill. Their version of the 'Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (foreshadowing Devo) burns Mick and Keith at the stake."

Now, does that make you feel terribly square to be acknowledged by SPIN? Does it make you feel validated? Does it make you wonder why only one RZ album is on the list? Are you surprised that SPIN has even heard of The Residents?

Do you think they have noticed that Satisfaction is not on The Third Reich N Roll?

(Thanks for the alert, Victor.)

I have sketchy information that The Museum of Modern Art in New York will be showing the ten new one-minute movies by The Residents as part of a video program on Wednesday, December 1, 2004.

The original four one-minute movies (1980) are part of the permanent collection of the museum. The new one-minute movies were created for the soon to be released, The Commercial Album DVD.

From Ralph America Aug 25, 2004

Hello Ralph Friend,

If you don't have kids, or friends with kids, or family members with kids,
or if you just don't like kids, go ahead and delete this message.

Anyhow, you may have noticed that we've been selling the kiddie "classic
eyeball" tees for infants and toddlers, well we've just launched a new
site with all sorts of warped gear for kids, including the eerie eye.

So, if yer interested, we'd just like to let you know about the little
corner of the internet known as http://www.astrotot.net - please stop by
when you have a chance, or pass the URL to a pregnant pal, pick up a baby
shower gift, or get a fine gift for a loveable nephew.

Thanks for listening...hopefully the next update you get will be about the
upcoming "I Murdered Mommy" release...uhhhhhhhoooooBOY!

The missing year (as reported from Residents.com - Aug 19, 2004)

Image from Residents.com

The rumor is that Ralph America, knowing that The Residents were busy with new projects for Mute, casually asked the group if they had something old they would like to put out. The group responded as they usually do to such a question,"nope".

Then one said, well there is always the missing year.

The "missing year" apparently ran from late 1996 to summer 1997. It started after the completion of Bad Day on the Midway and the theatrical run of Freak Show in Prague. It ended with Disfigured Night.

In between, one project dominated The Residents every waking moment.

The Ralph America release is said to be a book of the drawings and writings for the project plus a CD of preliminary music that was used for the corporate sales pitches in the attempt to raise the funds to actually create the CD-ROM. I haven't seen any of it, but I have every reason to suspect it will prove to be an intriguing look at an idea that never happened as well as plug a hole in The Residents project time line. It will not be the actual CD-ROM, of course, as it never existed.

My best guess is that it will be released in time for the holidays, but I also know that often these kinds of things run later than expected. I'll keep you informed as I learn more.

Ralph announces problems with free Brumalia replacement cover ordering process - July 29, 2004

Hi Ralph Friend...

criminy, we're having bad luck...

If you ordered a Brumalia replacement cover (by itself, with no other
items) you might've noticed that you weren't asked for any payment info
for the shipping cost. Well, you learn something new everyday. We learned
that we can't have an item in the shopping cart that doesn't cost
anything, otherwise you won't be asked to pay for shipping. So now the
Brumalia replacement cover will cost you ONE PENNY. Sorry for the cost
increase.

So, we see that a lot of you have ordered the replacement cover, but
haven't paid for shipping, cuz you weren't asked for it. Gauhhhh.

ANyhow, please place your order again if you don't mind. Again, this is
ONLY for those who ordered the replacement cover by ITSELF. If you ordered
other items, there was no problem.

Make sense? Nuff sed?
thanks

The Ralph Gang (quickly pulling their hair out...writhing, screaming...)

Ralph America reports the following July 28, 2004

HI Ralph Friend,

So if you were amongst the first 475 folks to get a copy of The 12 Days of
Brumalia, and would like a "properly printed" digipak cover (sans cd), you
can do that now. Just be sure to take the short quiz before ordering. They
are free (except for shipping, unless yer ordering something else, then
they're free).

We also now have God in 3 Persons, the DELUXE 2 CD set version, back in
stock. (They've been unavailable for some time now...)

That is all for now good friend, be seeing you at the Ralph corner
store...

Residents Albums Disappearing - As reported from Residents.com July 27, 2004

Image from Residents.com

Despair sets in.

There are big changes abreast concerning availability of Residents titles. ESD in the USA is no longer producing Residents CD’s, so all ESD CD’s are limited to what is still in the warehouse. A number of titles are already sold out, like (true to its name) Not Available. Mute is licensing some back catalog titles, five so far: Commercial, Wormwood, Gingerbread Man, Our Finest Flowers, Third Reich. These titles will be available only on the Mute label and the Bomba label starting this fall (2004).
Due to changes in marketing music, some of the music will only be available in the future via download, or through special edition on CD’s.

Below is a semi-accurate list of what is still being sold by Euro Ralph, Ralph America, and Bomba. Many are limited in quantity. The most accurate list is on each label’s web site, of course.

Brumalia finally lands at Ralph America with the correct cover - July 17,2004

Ralph America reports that the new covers are in, are correct and Brumalia is ready to start shipping on Monday the 18th.

Ralph America says (July 17, 2004):

Brumalia nightmare ends

We have finally got a batch of Brumalia covers that have been printed
correctly. Woo hoo! So, here's the deal. First we will fill all of the
orders that have backed up waiting on these. We apologize for the wait!!
Then by next week at some point we will post instructions for those who
already have their poorly printed copy as to how they will be able to
obtain a correctly printed cover. Thanks for your patience.

In the meantime, ESD titles are going fast...as are the new sweatshirts,
we're glad we could provide something you like so much. After getting to
the 3rd pressing though, this might be all that we do print, so if you
want one, act now. And if it just doesn't seem cold enough to order one
right now, think of the people in the southern hemisphere, where it is
cold.

An email from our friends at Ralph - July 1, 2004

Dear Ralph Friend...

Breaking news 6/30/04
Yesterday we were expecting the corrected covers for Brumalia. They
arrived today. While they were glued correctly this time, the color
correction was not made. Believe me, we're quite frustrated, as this
should have been finished correctly back in MAY! Not to mention, it's a
very simple job to print. Anyway, what does this mean to you? Cryptic
Corp. has decided to just have the release printed elsewhere, and we
agree. After all, they had 2 chances... So it goes out again to another
outlet, and hopefully we will have it soon, but we will update you. For
now, this means that if you have an order with us for Brumalia, it will
not ship until we get properly printed covers, and for those waiting on
covers we will be making an announcement with instructions on how to get
your cover. We do apologize, and promise to keep you updated on
ralphamerica.com, so please check back.

Thanks for still being our friend,
beleaguered,
Ralph America
