Residents News

Big Brother says he made a mistake - what he said at Residents.com:

I finally got my hands on a Brumalia to see what had happened to the cover. It was not as extreme as I had described (see above).

So the printers forgot to run the black plate and they manufactured them with the cover on the inside and the inside on the outside. Could have happened to any ..... LOUSY AMATEUR.

Anyway, I hear the correct covers are being made, we'll see if they get them right this time.

If you are calling Ralph America about getting a botched cover, they had to return the bad covers so they have been destroyed. Only a few went out to meet the needs of the true Brumalian celebrators who had to have it by the 21st.

--------------------------------------------

News from our buddies at Ralph - posted June 19th, 2004.

Hi Ralph Friend,

A word or two to shed a little light on the incident de la Botch.

As reported on the bog (residents.com) the manufacturer screwed up the 12
Days of Brumalia covers. Anyone that has one now, or who has ordered one
recently has a "botched" cover. In fact we'll probably be sending out the
"botched covers" for the next few days. Here is a definition of "botched"
in this case.

The cover is inside out (as in, the eyeball in the triangle was supposed
to be under the disc tray, but it's on the front cover), and as if this
weren't enough...the printer seems to have left out the BLACK INK. So the
color is completely wrong.

However, we wanted you to enjoy the 12 Days of Brumalia in time for summer
solstice. So we're sending out what we have in stock. By next week we
should have properly printed covers. All orders after the new covers
arrive will be in the corrected cover. We will also have enough covers
available to send to those who have the "botched" covers (sans cd of
course.) You'll just have to pay for postage, or we can throw one in to
yer next order. We won't be numbering the replacement covers, as you have
the number on the botched cover, and, well, unfortunately that will be
more rare than the real cover (there's the irony of the situation.)

If you didn't know what to look for, you wouldn't know it was botched.
However, Big Brother took the news a little harder than we imagined he
might, and reacted as he did on the bog.

Anyhow, we hope this clears up the whole botched up ordeal.

Brumalia attacked by CD manufacturer

An artist's imagined re-creation of the trashing of The 12 Days Brumalia CD cover

Image from Residents.com

The forces of "put-the-X-back-in-Brumalia" rogues are at it again, attacking the joyous true meaning of December 25th. The entire run of covers for the new release were apparently trashed by the irate manufacturer in an attempt to destroy the pleasures of the ancient holiday.

Ralph America, not to be deterred, will be sending out a limited number of copies with this disgraceful cover to the folks who ordered early so that their "Brumalia in Summer" celebrations (June 21st) will not be disrupted.

Arrangements will be made to get them the correct and serious cover as soon as the evil manufacturer gets them redone. Others will get the new covers as well, including the shipment to Euro Ralph.

News from Euro Ralph

Image from Residents.com

Euro Ralph is expecting a shipment of The 12 Days of Brumalia as soon as the cover dispute is resolved so the Euro crowd can get the CD faster (and easier) through ER. Also, I hear that the vinyl King & Eye:RMX and the WB:RMX are down to just a few copies if anyone has been putting off adding them to their collection.

While speaking with ER, I also took the opportunity to ask about their Freak Show DVD project which was scheduled for release this fall. As you know, lead artist Jim Ludtke died a couple of months back leaving the project in disarray. Apparently the DVD was immediately shelved. The work was still too incomplete to be able to piece anything coherent together. So if you have been hoping (as I was) to see the FS DVD, it now looks like it won't happen at all.

THE RESIDENTS
COMMERCIAL ALBUM DVD RELEASE - OCT 2004
COMMERCIAL ALBUM RE-RELEASE - OCT 2004

THE RESIDENTS ARE WITHOUT
features, futures, pasts or presence
THE RESIDENTS ARE WITHIN
us all
THE RESIDENTS ARE ABOUT
music, culture, creativity and chaos
THE RESIDENTS ARE NOT IN
and never will be

Mute is proud to release The Residents’ Commercial Album DVD along with a re-release of the landmark 1980 album on Compact Disc. Both products will be in stores around Hallowe'en of this year.

In 1980 The Residents created four short films based on Commercial Album songs. Long considered as ground breaking music videos, these films are now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Commercial Album, the DVD will both compliment and complete the project with an amazing collection of 56 one-minute films based on the original 40 Commercial Album songs. In order to produce this large number of films, in addition to themselves, The Residents have assembled an outstanding group of 42 visual artists from around the world. Working in various forms ranging from animation, live action, and puppetry to drawing, photography and sculpture, the disc is a virtual film festival in miniature. In addition The DVD has an innovative game-like interface that allows viewers to explore a maze in the process of viewing the videos. This complex of rooms contains a unpredictable series of interactive features as it reveals the 56 videos created by The Residents and their all star cast of visual collaborators.

For those unfamiliar with The Residents, the group is now entering its fourth decade as faceless anti-stars, existing in the dim outskirts of mainstream awareness.
During that entire time, they've consciously kept their origins and personal lives shrouded in mystery. The creation of this obviously contrived "mystery" was one of the first decisions they reached after realising that they had become a group - something they define as an organism with a mind, will and direction of its own. The essence of this decision was to aggressively create a separation between their personal and professional lives. Anonymity was, and is, their only rule. They live by it to this day.

Since, in 1980, the nature of their music prohibited access to pop radio, The Residents originally envisioned The Commercial Album, as a reinvention of the Top Forty format. With this concept the group attempted to revolutionise the way popular music was heard. The concept behind the material is explained in these 5 points:

Point one: Pop music is mostly a repetition of two types of musical
and lyrical phrases, the verse and the chorus.
Point two: These elements usually repeat three times in a three minute
pop song
Point three: Eliminate the excess and a pop song is only one minute long.
Point four: One minute is also the length of most commercials, and
therefore their corresponding jingles.
Point five: Jingles are the folk music of America.

Conclusion: THE RESIDENTS' COMMERCIAL ALBUM

As well as the Commercial DVD and Album, Mute Records and The Residents plan to re-release several refurbished back catalogue items featuring occasional bonus discs, a new album in 2005, and a future filled with featureless products.

Massachusetts based distributor, Forced Exposure, has begun the process of selling EuroRalph imports. As reported here in early December, the titles were originally expected to appear in January, but due to unexplained problems, EF has only recently launched their effort to get Euro Ralph titles into stores in the USA.

The currently available CD's include the double 3" release of Duck Stab, the vinyl Meet the Residents, and the double disc deluxe issue of Demons Dance Alone, as well as other titles.

Later in May, FE will also start selling the WB:RMX and King and Eye:RMX titles.

The Residents have decided to release the songs of Brumalia on CD-ROM.  The CD-ROM will come out in the May/June time period 2004.

Residents.com reported the following items and these were "echoed" here April 18, 2004:

The Residents have agreed to be a part of a new compilation of old songs, ENGLAND'S DREAMING.

The Residents have survived the ravages of time by evolving. This compilation reopens the old New Wave and Punk wounds and somehow The Residents are clearly no more comfortable here than they have been anywhere else. None the less, Jon Savage, noted Brit journalist, has compiled this intriguing CD that includes the pre-eyeball group doing "Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life." Other bands represented include Iggy and the Stooges, Patti Smith, Ramones, Siouxie and the Banshees, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Public Image Ltd, and plenty more.

Due for release in the fall of 2004.

EuroRalph to begin selling The King and Eye Remix:

In 1989 The Residents recorded an album of Elvis hits called The King & Eye. Anyone knowing The Residents work would not be surprised that there was no attempt at recreating the original arrangements. In fact a great deal of work went into rethinking the music and digging into the freudian aspects of the lyrics. The group wished to return the pain to the material which swirls around ideas of lost love and obsession. The album was tied together with a children's story about a baby who wanted to be king because he felt such deep emptyness.

The Residents saw Elvis's life as a cautionary tale. A story of lost innocence, misplaced while searching for night time shadows. Even more amazing to The Residents, in death, Elvis became the ultimate Americana icon.

In 2003, The Residents asked German remix whiz, PARALYZER, to listen to the original 24 track master and see what he would do to moderize their album to make it more relevant to life in the 21st century. Paralyzer accepted the challenge but asked that the group give him free rein to interprete the pieces. They excitedly agreed.

The Residents only heard the result when Paralyzer finally presented his vision of Elvis to them, The King & Eye: RMX.

WB:RMX to be pressed in Europe and Japan

Image from Residents.com

This morning, agreements were reached to expand the territory for the instant hit, WB:RMX. Both Bomba, in Tokyo and our own dear Euro Ralph in Hamburg will be offering the album in local pressings as quickly as the factory can pump the disks out. Euro Ralph will also carry the USA version.

WB:RMX is an album originally recorded 32 years ago by The Residents. The original album has never been released, but the group decided to do a remix of it and release that. So it is a strange mix of the old and the new. We don't mind "strange" do we.

The Residents report that XM Satellite Radio would be dropping their show as well as other Special X shows..... (See the quotation below from Residents.com)

Only one more month of broadcasting of The Residents show, as well as all the other Special X shows.
Every tuesday at 10:00 PM East Coast Time at Channel XM 30 (known as Special X) is where you could always find 2 commercial free hours of Residents music, even if you lived in desert wastes of Utah, the city wastes of LA, or the cultural wastes of everywhere. But as of February that will no longer be true. Special X is being pulled by the XM honchos and replaced with a new punk channel. Remember punk? Oh, you're right, it popular again. Maybe Satisfaction will get a spin.

This tuesday night, and each tuesday night for the rest of this month you'll be hearing selections from WB:RMX and Brumalia as well as a wild assortment of other Residents songs. After that... well, who knows?

If you feel so inclined, drop XM a note so they know that they serve a valuable purpose by being the worlds biggest broadcaster of The Residents. Here's the email address:

Hmmmm..... Maybe it is time for that all Residents internet radio channel.....

Brumalia: Birthday of the Sun

Thousands of years before Christ, so-called pagans worshiped the Sun as a god. When winter approached, the sun dipped lower and lower in the sky each day. It seemed to the people that their god was forsaking them. The shortest day of the year came around December 21 (winter solstice). Several days later it became evident that the sun was coming back. When the people were sure the sun was returning, a great celebration called the Brumalia began on December 25th.

On the eve of Brumalia, people exchanged gifts, sang songs, played games, and feasted. They kissed under mistletoe, which was considered sacred to the Sun-god and thought to have miraculous healing qualities. Holly berries were also considered sacred. Holly wreaths, round like the sun, decorated houses and places of worship during Brumalia.

The Roman Catholic Church absorbed the Brumalian rituals around 350 A. D. In the fifth century the church ordered Christmas to be celebrated forever on the Brumalia, December 25, inasmuch as no certain knowledge of Christ’s birthday existed. The birthday of the sun, became the birthday of the son. Convenient, huh?

But, no matter. Underneath it all, it is still Brumalia. And a happy happy Brumalia from Residents.com.

Brumalia 12 - Big Hand

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
-Henry David Thoreau

The Epiphany - the 13th Day

Epiphany is the day after the 12 Days of Brumalia and the climax of the entire Holiday Season and the Twelve Days of Brumalia, which are counted from December 25th until today - January 5th. The twelfth day of Brumalia is called Twelfth Night, which some cultures observe with feasting.

Epiphany goes by other names. It is known as Three Kings’ Day, el Dia de los Tres Reyes, Driekoningendag and Theophany. Originally, a solemn Christmas was observed on Epiphany, but in the fifth century, the popularity of party-oriented Brumalia on December 25th was so great that the Catholic church confiscated the date and moved Christmas on top of it. Ever since, there has been this schizoid feeling about the holidays among Christians... is it a serious religious holiday with mangers and such, or is it a party time with colored lights and Santa.

But I digress.

Thank you for participating in our Brumalian celebration.

The Cryptic Corporation, and The Residents invite you to join us again tomorrow, the 6th of January for The Feast of Epiphany.

Brumalia Bonus

The True meaning of Brumalia

As the end of the 12 Days comes into sight, it is important that we not forget the true meaning of Brumalia.

Five thousand years of human history--maybe more--have enfolded this season with rich traditions. Some celebrate Christmas, some Chanukah, maybe Kwanzaa, Yule (Jule), Sinterklaas, New Years, Winter Solstice and even in some rare cases, Saturnia and Brumalia. And that's just a few from our Western Cultures. The important thing is to observe the cycle of life and acknowledge it with a bit of celebration. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Take a walk and check out a dead leaf. Remember that, while today is just the day after yesterday, it is also a new beginning. Each human is allowed a limited number of year cycles. Make 2004 count and do something cool this year.

Brumalia 9 - Wiggling Wahines

I say to you: we must still have chaos within us to be able to give birth to a dancing star. I say to you: you still have chaos within you.
-Friedrich Nietzsche

Brumalia 8 - Maid being Milked

I want mother’s milk,
that good sour soup.
I want breasts singing like eggplants,
and a mouth above making kisses.
I want nipples like shy strawberries
for I need to suck the sky.

And die in music.

This is a presale. Ralph regrets that this new item will probably not be available for shipment before the holidays. HOWEVER, if you are getting this as a gift for someone, they can send you a "gift presentation card."

When you check out with this purchase, you can choose if you want the presentation card (an extra $1 for postage/handling). It is a nice little screen printed card.

Ralph expects shipping to happen before the new year, but maybe closer to the 5th of January. Hard to say for sure, knowing how easily Italian bindery machines break down.

ANOTHER YEAR OLDER

Image from Residents.com

2002 had been a big year for The Residents. They were celebrating their 30th Anniversary so a big project was in order. Instead of one, we got two. First was the album and show of Demons Dance Alone, and second was the large box set of CD’s and a DVD named Kettles of Fish on the Outskirts of Town.

These projects overlapped into 2003, with the Demons Dance Alone show completing two more tours in Europe. Highlights of the tours included first time visits to St. Petersburg, Russia and Belgrade, Serbia. The most curious show was, undoubtedly, the BAM Festival in Barcelona, Spain. The festival took up half of an operating train station, one of those big European style ones. The Residents were asked to reduce the show to one hour, and they did, almost to the minute. Added to that was the problem of equipment failure and finally, throw in a member of the audience joining The Residents on stage for the final Demon dance, and you have yourself one surreal event. Another show of note was the pleasant return to the stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

There was a sense of sadness as the group completed the final performance of Demons Dance Alone in Thessoloniki, Greece. There was an awareness that Demons was the last of three touring shows that had kept the group busy for over five years. The Residents could not enter their fourth decade without reinventing themselves once again. Everything that begins, has an ending... sorry... I had to throw that in.

Kettles of Fish and the enigmatic Eskimo DVD picked up momentum in 2003 even though they were released in 2002. A big splash was made with the release of the Demons Dance Alone DVD in September. Finally those who had missed the live show could get a sense of what everyone was raving about. As a spin off, a DVD single was also released: The Golden Goat. Missing from 2003 was any substantial audio projects, though The Residents are known to be working on something unique. Some say the audio problem involves changes in the record industry, including the popularity of P2P, made the Residents devote more time to DVD development and touring. Also, The Residents had a friendly split with their long time record label in the USA, ESD, and this had an impact on their audio output plans. They have not signed with any replacement label. Likewise, The Residents went with a new touring agent in the USA, KORK. As of the moment, the group is not working on any plans to tour so we have yet to see where this will take them.

My favorite event of 2003 would have to have been the arrival of the news blog, Residents.com. Okay, I am biased. I believe we will really see the blog starting to blossom in 2004.

But what else is set for 2004, you are wondering. I expect to hear that the Disfigured Night DVD is set for release any day now and a Freak Show DVD is in the works. I’m certain that there is going to be a lot of audio in 2004, old and new, perhaps making up for the shortage in 2003. Probably... more than one album will be released, and that doesn’t even count the Paralyzer project.

My crystal ball says that you will be hearing about more business deals, distribution plans and maybe even label signings. While there is currently no talk of live shows, I wouldn’t be surprised if some odd performance popped up of the non-touring variety. Though this is definitely speculation.

Whatever does actually happen, you know I will be there to report on it.

Hang on for the fourth decade,
Big Bro, your dot com guy

News from Ralph America dated November 14, 2003

Hello Ralph Friend -
just a quick update for yer holiday scheduling:

A few new items will be announced soon, including a new Santa Dog shirt,
Residents kids-wear, and soon after the presale for the very special
Disfigured Night DVD will begin. After seeing the proofs for this item, it
seems clear that it will be a highly coveted item. Unfortunately they will
probably not ship before the holiday season, but the presale will begin
before then, and Ralph might be able to supply a gift card of sorts, for
presentation of the lovely gift. More on this when the presale is
announced.

Also, if you are shopping with any of the Astropitch sites (astroclam.com,
ralphamerica.com, astropitch.com) for the holiday season, keep in mind
that we will not be shipping between Dec. 17th and Dec. 26th (we have to
give the shipping slaves some time off for egg nog!)

That is all, and you will be hearing from us again soon...

Coming Soon - - The official shop version of Demons Dance Alone DVD

Image from Residents.com

Why should you care? You shouldn't since you already bought the much more fab Director's Cut from Ralph AM. But there were only 1000 of those (and they are gone), so the rest of the "less informed" world needs their Demons too.

Currently in production in Germany, I expect it in Wal-Mart around the end of November. Shipping date will be announced as soon as I know one.

Ralph America - - The Golden Goat DVD Single now in stock

Golden Goat (aka "Pickle") finally arrives at Ralph AM

Image from Residents.com

The first single from the Demons Dance Alone DVD is "The Golden Goat." The NTSC/all region DVD includes a single sized edit of The Golden Goat video, plus a radical remix of both the video and music.

The single is also noteworthy in that the sound for the videos has not been compressed. Because there was space on the disc, the music is in full PCM (like on CD's) format.

As a bonus track, the homo-erotic SM video for "Teddy" is included. This video was originally made for a proposed sequel to the DVD, Icky Flix. When the idea was dropped to do a follow-up, Teddy just got pushed off into a corner until being rediscovered this summer. Warning, contains nudity and fetishistic behavior.

BAD DAY - - exhibit in Tampa, Florida

This photo just came in of the Residents saying hello to Ms Barbier (in red) at her opening on Friday, October 24.

Uhhh, actually The Residents were cropped out of the picture and were standing just behind the guy in the eyeball.

DDA tour diary follow up - - Serbia's DemoChristian party has decided that The Residents are OK after all

Informal apology issued by Prime Minister Kostunica

After Prime Minister Kostunica's Party (DemoChristian) was merciless battered by the press for their "stupid" attack on The Residents when the Demons Dance Alone show played Belgrade, Konstunica, in a press conference, said he listened to three Residents albums and has determined that The Residents are not satanic.

He also said The Residents have his sympathies for the "anti-globalist attitude," whatever that might mean.

BAD DAY ON THE MIDWAY - - Gallery Exhibit in Tampa, Florida

Artist, Leigh Barbier, will be exhibiting her original paintings commissioned by The Residents for the award winning CDRom game.

Image from Residents.com

The paintings were commissioned for a "mural" in the Marvels of Mayhem exhibit. This will be the first exhibition of the paintings which are all now in private collections. Ms Barbier has created other works for The Residents including the Wormwood booklet illustrations. More recently she was employed by George Lucas's special effects company, Industrial Light and Magic, for the creation of art for films like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Star War series.

The Residents' Bad Day on the Midway, which was released by Inscape in 1995, is no longer in print.

Ms Barbier also will be showing new works: eyeless doll heads and pencil on paper sketches from the Mothers of Mushroomville series.

Sneek Peek - Spring 2004

Freak Show meets Bad Day on the Midway on this off-beat DVD

The madman, Jim Ludtke, is at it again. His work for the "Freak Show" and "Bad Day" CDRom's has pretty much fallen into obscurity as the games are long out of print, so he is tackling creating those worlds again in a new co-production with The Residents for an animated DVD. Expect it in the spring of '04.

All pretty hush hush, but I'll sneak a peak when I can of the progress.

DDA tour diary - - Lead character masks absent for Utrecht performance

DDA masks, left in San Francisco by mistake, do not arrive in time for the first performance

When cases were first opened to prepare for the public dress rehearsal in Utrecht, Holland, it was discovered that the lead character masks had not been packed. A snappy Federal Express managed to get the masks to Gent, Belgium in time, but the Utrecht performance just proceeded without them. After all, the show must go on. Here's what the performers looked like in that unique show.

--------------------------------------------

FAQ

1. What is the difference between the various versions of the DDA DVD?
2. What is the weird video when you click on the word "Pickle" on the Golden Goat DVD single? Why "Pickle"?

1. The DDA versions are:

---A. The Directors Cut. Limited numbered edition with photo book and interactive menu. Contains five extra 5.1 surround mixes of missing pieces of the show plus a video used to motivate the sales staff at RYKO distribution when the DDA album was first released September 2002. And maybe some other things if you know where to look. Released in September, 03.

---B. The "store" version. Standard plastic DVD case. Interactive menu. Includes "Pickle" as a bonus. Predicted to be released in November, 03.

---C. Promotional version. Standard plastic DVD case. No menu - the program just plays. No extras, bonus beauties, or hidden anythings. Not for sale, instead it is given away to media and others under special promotions. For instance it was given away on the final DDA tour for free if you bought "Golden Goat." Cover art different from store version. Produced in September, 03 for journalists.

2. The weird video is a kind of commercial with screen grabs from other Residents DVD's. It can be referred to as Pickle if you want to call it something. Why is it called pickle? No one will say.

--------------------------------------------

Touring - - Demons Dance Alone era comes to an abrupt halt

The European tour marched 6000 miles across Europe stopping only when it reached the Aegean Sea.

Expect an assortment of tour related bits to pop up here on the blog as information is organized. The Residents have taken off for a couple of weeks to the Greek island of Patmos to begin planning their fourth decade. Whatever that may be, you will read about it here first. They have promised to send photos from Patmos for publishing, too.

--------------------------------------------

DDA Tour - - The Residents survive Serbian attack

Below is an account by Ambrozic Dragan, the promoter for the sold out show in Belgrade, Serbia, reporting back on the appearance of The Residents. This was the first time a non-classical performance had appeared in this concert hall since 1897... or something like that.

By the way, The Residents are not Satanists.
-
The show was great, even better then I expected, and I liked it even more then "King and Eye", which I saw in Ljubljana 1989. The audience was totally euphoric at the end.
-
The Residents team is flexible and profesionall, everything went totally smooth - which is fantastic bearing in mind they played a show in Prague (also sold out) a night before and traveled 16 hours by bus to Belgrade (make a note of the travel distance). They were late two hours, thanks to the fact that no one was working for two hours overnight on the Hungarian side of Austrian/Hungarian border (you could have attacked Hungaria that night between 2am and 4am and noone would have noticed).
-
Our show was over at 11pm, but since the bus couldn't move until 2am (the driver needed rest), we spent the rest of the evening in the club of Kolarac venue, which has only couple of dishes (but they are prepared very good), but is the only nearby place working such late hours. Interestingly enough, they have a live music with selection of pop/folk tunes (including some Ceca) - this cultural clash ended in The Residents team making photos with the local singers and - all in all - great party for the tired musicians.
-
A day before the show, Democratic Party of Serbia (Kostunica's DemoChristians), gave the statement accusing Ministry of Culture of Serbia (who were our donators) of supporting satanistic show in the religious holiday (27.9 was indeed an Orthodox Christians holiday). They based the statement on the annonimous letter which was sent to them and Kolarac venue and Orthodiox church, by somebody who was obviously checking The Residents website in search of satanistic (or at least anti-christian) references, and giving them a wild imagination treatment.
-
I reacted on radio B92 by giving a short description of the show and calling the representative of Kostunica party to attend it, but this led us into hiring double security, as one can never know (thankfully, nothing happened). The statement was published only in one daily newspapers, but it was on couple of TV news, which was enough for everybody to start calling me for comment. Not only that we had around 80 journalist regularly attending the show (including ones from Ljubljana, Skoje and Timisoara in Romania), but I had to give shorter or longer interviews to Radio Free Europe, and pretty much all liberal print we have in Serbia.
-
Typically, the reviews of The Residents show were all exillarated, with journalists accusing Kostunica party of just being plain stupid.
-
Great adventure. Give us more satanists. Satanists have better fun, as Zlatko would say.

Ralph America - - Demons Dance Alone DVD finally appears

Special limited edition contains extras that will not be included on the "store" version.

After a string of delays, the Directors Cut version of the DDA DVD finally materialized even as the final DDA tour marched into it's final shows.

Apparently, the need to encourage people to purchase is not necessary as I understand they are flying out the Ralph America door rather quickly and I reluctantly must admit to not having seen one myself as of yet.

EURO RALPH - - THE GOLDEN GOAT DVD SINGLE - AND A SURPRISE fOR tOUR aTTENDEES

Euro Ralph is still waiting for the fancy Demons Dance Alone DVD to come in from Ralph America. So....

All that is currently holding up the release of the Ralph America DDA DVD is the beautiful package. Meanwhile preparation has continued for the regular store version, and for journalists, a special promo version. Since the journalist version has already been made, Euro Ralph has decided to give away a promo copy version of Demons Dance Alone DVD with each Golden Goat DVD single purchased at shows. Yep, free. Though it is not exactly the same as the other releases - for instance, it has no menus, or bonus items and no eggs - it is a great way of getting the main content of the DVD at an amazingly fair price of free.

Expectations are that the Ralph America collectible numbered art version will also be for sale at the shows so you can pick up both.

The first single from the Demons Dance Alone DVD will be "The Golden Goat." The disc will be offered for sale on the upcoming European tour. The NTSC/all region DVD will include a single sized edit of The Golden Goat video, plus a radical remix of both the video and music.

DISFIGURED NIGHT DVD

"Ralph America has announced that there are definite plans for a DVD release of Disfigured Night coming later in the fall. The disc will include the original broadcast version which was shot by VIVA (German music TV) in celebration for the Residents 25th Anniversary. Also on the disc will be a unique video remix. This was created by taking feeds directly from the cameras before the graphics were inserted to replace the green screen. Therefore the green screen could be removed by The Residents and enhanced with new backgrounds.

This new 2003 full length (31 minutes) rethinking of the story of Silly Billy is accompanied by both a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mix and a PCM Stereo mix for those without surround systems. NTSC, 4:3 ratio picture.

At this time, no release date has been announced as the packaging is still being designed. Watch these pages for a release date announcement."

TOKYO - TWO-NIGHT LECTURE ON THE ART OF THE RESIDENTS

"Noted lecturer, Manabu Yuasa, presented two three hours lectures on The Residents last week entitled, Medama no Gakko (School of Eyeballs).

The first lecture focused on the Residents early works suggesting their North Louisiana roots contributed to their messages through works like The Third Reich 'n' Roll video, Eskimo, The Mole Show.

The second lecture (a few days later) focused on cover tunes by The Residents in comparison with the originals.

Mr. Yuasa played the new cover of Bob Dylan's 'Maggy's Farm" at the end of each lecture. The recording had been presented to the lecture series as a gift from The Residents to the audience.

Before and during this lecture event, Tower Records in Shibuya constructed a special display for The Residents CDs with audio sampling equipment and flyers advertising the lecture.

The next lecture is planned for October."

Hello Ralph Friends -
just a note that the html slaves have been pluggin away for days and days
now to present to you the gallery of entries to the Ralph Art Contest Pt.
1.

So head on over to the site, have a look around at the gallery (the link
is on the front page). Each page might take a while to load, but there are
some mighty fine entries, and we didn't want to compromise them by
reducing colors or compressing too much.

You might also want to be sure that we've received your entry. If your
entry is not there, first send us an email (WITHOUT THE ATTACHMENT) to
art@ralphamerica.com asking us why our head us up our...ahem...hard drive
(i guess), and we'll see if we can find the missing item. Hopefully we
can, but from time to time technology fails us all. We don't want anyone
to fall victim to that now. (Also, please remember that we only accept 2
entries per person, so if you sent us more than that, we just chose 2 for
you.)

Anyhow, enjoy the art, and once we've made sure we have everything posted,
we'll send the Orbed Oracles over to starting having a look.

Thanks for your time and participation!

make a short comic, political cartoon, hentai, animae...you name it.

ESD/NORTHSIDE/OMNIUM NEWS  May 3, 2003

* ESD is sad to announce the end of its historic relationship with The
Residents. They were one of the first artists to join our roster when the
label was started in 1987, and together we have released 40 CDs over those
16 years. But now they have decided to handle their back catalog
themselves, and will release limited deluxe editions which they will
largely sell directly through their own website (www.residents.com) and
related companies. We will continue to sell what we have through our
website until it's all gone, so grab what you want, while you still can.
These titles are also already being pulled back at retail stores.

* Wendy Carlos is STILL working on the final two ESD remasters of her
classic recordings, "By Request" and "The Secrets of Synthesis." Stay tuned!

The use was spotted by several Moles in the UK (thanks guys) who
contacted us and Euro Ralph.

The T-Mobile lawyers only took five minutes to agree to a settlement
once they heard the original recording from Meet the Residents.

What does this mean to you? Well, if you haven't picked up that copy of
Tunes of Two Cities, or Have a Bad Day or Diskomo 2000, this would be the
time to do so. Not just those titles, but any back catalog titles by The
Residents or Snakefinger (on ESD). ESD will no longer be manufacturing any
Residents titles, and have already stopped making a lot of them already.
So there is a FINITE number of stock left on all titles. These are the
cheapest versions of these releases, and the only other options for you
would be the Bomba (Japanese) or EuroRalph versions.

What will become of the entire back catalog? (you may ask...) Well, we're
not sure yet. Certainly there will not be a time when all of the titles
are in print again. We do know that. We know that many titles will again
be re-thought by The Residents to find a way to make them better before
they are unleashed again on the masses, but we don't know how. We know
that Ralph America will play a significant role in all of this, but that
role is not yet clear.

That is all we can answer at this time, so you might try to get all of
those missing titles in yer collection. If it's listed on the site, 99% of
the time we have it in stock, or on order, so we should be able to
accomodate your buying whim.

Also, if you ordered Kettles of Fish, all orders have ben shipped, so you
should be receiving it shortly if you haven't already.

That is all for now, we hope all in Europe had a chance to see The Demons
Tour and found it enjoyable.

PS - and a few new catches at http://www.clamazon.com - missing titles
from Czech Republic's Plastic People of the Universe, and new ones from
Iva Bittova. Lots of stuff from experimental noise label RRR (Merzbow,
Thurston Moore, Violent Onsen Geisha etc), a collection of Trumans Water
singles on one disc, the new Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Ron
Anderson's (Molecules, RonRuins) new project PAK (produced by Elliot
Sharp) is also here!

SAYING GOODBYE TO SOME OLD FRIENDS

After over fifteen years of working together, The Cryptic Corporation
announces that RYKO Disc distributed Eastside Digital in Minneapolis
will no longer be marketing titles by The Residents.  ESD will be
limiting it's focus to folk rock music from Scandinavia which it
currently markets under the Northside Digital label.

As more and more CD's vie for less and less retail space, The Cryptic
Corporation feels it is time to examine the extensive catalog of titles
by The Residents and make decisions about which titles should remain in
print, which should go into occasional  limited pressings, and which
should be eliminated entirely.

As of this moment there is no USA label for any Residents products, but
The Cryptics will be talking with new labels over the summer to prepare
for the release of an album of new music in late 2003 or early 2004.
Of course the titles currently marketed by Bomba, Euro Ralph, and Ralph
America will remain in print for now, but ESD CD's will start
disappearing from shops immediately.

The working relationship with Cryptic and ESD has always been a good
one and will be missed as we both move in new directions.

Hi Residents Friends:
the moment that begins the moment you have been waiting for, is here (i
think the moment you are waiting for is the unwrapping of your new Kettles
of Fish box set).

Anyhow, today we are beginning to take orders for the long awaited, and
king of "frequently asked questions at Ralph": the Kettles of Fish Box
Set. The simple description is that this is a 3 CD+1 DVD Box set of all
Live Residents material, some previously released, but most of it
unreleased. Another FAQ is regarding the DVD portion of this set "Is it
just like Live from the Outskirts?" For the most part, yes, but there is a
slight variation in one of the menu options, which leads to some new
footage. Shipping begins on the week of March 31st (coming up quickly),
and for the first 150 orders we get of Kettles of Fish, each box will come
with a bonus set of Residents buttons, only available with the purchase of
the box set.

Track list and photos are at the site, with more details on the set.

Please stop by our little corner of the internet, and we look forward to
hearing from you...
PEACE!

Hello Resident friend!
Hopefully you've had a less-than-debilitating winter in yer part of the
globe, but if it's still chilly, or yer expecting more chills to come yer
way (or maybe yer in australia, where it's warm right now and yer winter
is on it's way) you've gotta pick up a new Residents Crawfish Work Jacket.
This is a very nice, embroidered work jacket (the crawfish embroidered on
the front and the "not available" wavy Residents logo on the back), and
it's the last 30th year wearable we'll be producing (their 30th year is
almost over now, isn't it? I guess it lasts as long as they keep
touring...)
Anyway, along with the fabulous jacket, we brought back the Residents
Skull Caps (ski hats, beannies, call them what you will...) and we have
them in new colors (cardinal red, regal purple and black) so stop by and
pick up yer Residents winter attire!

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you insulate from the
cold.

Howdy Residents Faithful...

Dropping you line today to let you know about a new item that dropped in
our lap today.

Out of the Cryptic Corp. "pile of stuff" we pulled a batch of the Steve
Cerio illustrated posters, comemorating the Brooklyn, NYC Demons Dance
Alone shows at the Warsaw last Nov. Anyhow, these are silk screened, they
are signed by Cerio and they are numbered (edition of 300). These
particular prints are stamped with the "Official Product" signature stamp
so you know it's "OFFICIAL!"

And don't forget, our CRAZY UNCLE WILLIE special is still in full force,
so if you buy the poster, you'll get 5 Uncle Willie newsletters with yer
purchase!

Hey, that's better than a poke in the eye...right?

anyhow, come on down to the Ralph store, at the corner of ht and tp...
http://www.ralphamerica.com
thanks, the Ralph Crew...

PS - and for the latest in other odd music stuffs, stop on by the
clamazon.com store (right next store) where we've recently stocked a rare
This Heat vinyl re-issue (live in 1980), re-issues of Savage Republic
81-83 recordings, and a really swell collection of all the Sid and Marty
Kroft them show music (HR Pufnstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea
Monsters, and our favorite Land of the Lost). Plus we picked up the Land
of Thin Dimes CD, and you might recognize some guitar action on that one
from Mr. Cook (guitar of the last few Rz tours). Not to mention cool stuff
from eastern europe like the lovely Iva Bittova and The Ecstasy of St.
Teresa. http://www.clamazon.com

We also forgot...

We also have some overprint "imperfect" posters from the Demons tour (the
'dyptich' posters). You can't tell there is anything wrong with them, but
our extra careful printer printed extras and separated out his best work
for the numbered edition. Well the numbered edition is gone now, but these
unnumbered prints are only $10 per pop...
though you should know, and we fergot...

thanks
thanks for listening
